BUILDING REGULATIONS - WINDOWS

HOW OUR WINDOWS COMPLY WITH ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Merrin Joinery incorporates the relevant building regulations into the design of each window.

The regulation of heat loss from a building is known as Part L of the Building Regulations. Our windows and French-doors are double glazed with ‘K-glass’ to give the required thermal insulating value - often referred to as a required U-value of 1.6 (or lower) for the whole window. Historic and listed buildings are usually exempt from this requirement.

The health & safety aspects of the Building Regulations include fire-safety, safe-glazing and adequate ventilation. The sizes of opening windows are controlled, so that escape from a fire is not hindered. Glass in specified areas must be toughened or laminated. Trickle-vents give ventilation for your boiler, and help eliminate mould-growth and the accumulation of pollutants.

Windows for listed buildings or buildings in conservation areas do not always have to comply with all of the building regulations. Where applicable, we manufacture our windows to comply with building regulations, and also provide relevant documentation. Our clients normally ask their local council’s Building Control officer to provide them with a full Building Control certificate for their fitted windows.
